The disastrous Battle of Solway Moss was fought in 1542. An excellent description of the confusion in the Scottish leadership, even though they outnumbered the enemy 5 to 1, can be found here.
John Carruthers, oldest son of John Carruthers, 5th Lord and 1st Baron Holmains, died at this battle. This John did not have any heirs. Therefore, the inheritance of Holmains went to his next oldest brother, George, 2nd Baron Holmains.
