John Carruthers - Member of Parliament

John Carruthers - Member of Parliament

John Carruthers was the 2nd Laird of Denbie, a university graduate and a writer in Edinburgh.  He married Margaret Carruthers, daughter of John Carruthers, 9th Laird and 5th Baron Holmains.  He was made a burgess of Edinburgh "gratis, for good service" on 30 August, 1714.  He was a member of the Scottish Parliament, 1705-1707, and voted against the union of Scotland and England.  John Carruthers died on 18 December, 1730 with the Denbie estate passing to his eldest son, John, and staying in the Carruthers family for another 150 years before it was sold to Murray of Murraythwaite.
