James Carothers b. 1766 married Ayles Carothers, daughter of John and Ayles Carothers. James and Ayles moved to Beaver County, Pennsylvania before the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794. They had one son, James b. 1788.

James b. 1788 married Sarah Forsythe Livingston. They lived on a farm 9 miles from Pittsburg in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. They and their 8 children, moved to Ralls County, Missouri in 1836 and on into Shelby County, Missouri in 1837. They settled about 4 miles northwest of the center of Shelbina, MO. James served in the Black Hawk Indian War and the War of 1812, including the Battle of New Orleans in 1814. He died December 10, 1865 and is buried in the old family burial ground on the 160 acre old homestead, Sec. 23, Twp. 57, R. 11 of Shelby, County. He willed this farm to his son Andrew Jackson Carothers b. 1834. The list of James b. 1788 children who also came from Pennsylvania to Missouri are:

Jane Carothers b. 1774 married James Bell. Their family moved to Shelby County, Missouri about 1842. Their children:

James Bell b. 1809 married Amanda Dickerson.
David Bell b. 18?? died in Shelbyville, Missouri.
Mary Ann Bell b. 18??

 

Andrew Carothers b. 1778 married Catherine Loudon. While Andrew stayed in Pennsylvania, his three sons all migrated to Missouri.

John Henderson Carothers b. 1813 married Mary Forsythe Carothers, the daughter of his first cousin. He came to Missouri about 1840.
Matthew Loudon Carothers b. 1816 had a family but the name of only one child, Andrew, is known. Matthew moved to Shelby County, Missouri in 1843 and was a merchant in Shelbyville, Missouri for several years. He owned land near Walkersville, Missouri. This family then crossed the plains to Oregon about 1865.
James Armstrong Carothers b. 1818 fought in the Mexican War. He is buried in Shelbyville, Missouri.
