Bell Family in America, The Reprint by Clan Bell International First published in 1913, The Bell Family in America has been out of print for many years. It has been reprinted by Clan Bell International in order to assist those researching genealogy of the early Bells in America. This small book is an account of the first Bell families in America, including a list by state of each Bell family in the United States, according to the 1790 US Census.

Clan Bell International

Bell Family in Dumfriesshire, The Steuart, James Published in 1932, this is the definitive record of the Bell family.  Only 150 copies were published, so this is a very difficult book to find.  Thirty Bell estates and the people who lived on them are elaborated on in this book.  There is much about the Carruthers family also in this book, since the two families inter-married and were involved in many of the same historical events.

Burke's Dormant and Extinct Peerages Burke, Sir Bernard, Ulster King of Arms Another excellent reference of hard to find information. Originally published in 1883, this 650 page edition was re-published in 1996. Again, the Carruthers Baronies of Mouswald and Holmains are not listed here. Gary John Carruthers has brought to our attention that:  from a letter from the Court of the Lord Lyon, Ormond Pursuivant of Arms, "The Carruthers designation was not of a Peerage, but a Feudal Barony".
Burke's General Armory Burke, Sir Bernard

Burke's General Armory is recognized as the definitive reference for Heraldic Arms.  It was first published in 1842 and updated periodically since.  The Carruthers family is included in four Coats-of-arms:  Carruthers of Howmains (Holmains), Carruthers the Steward Depute of Annandale in 1672, Carruthers-Wade of Holmains in 1854, and Mitchell-Carruthers of Scotland in 1876.

Many library systems have this book for your reference.  We use this book to define the two main colors on the Arms to put on the family name merchandise that is available through our store.

Carmack's Guide to Copyright & Contracts - A Primer for Genealogists, Writers & researchers Carmack, Sharon DeBartolo, CG Maybe you haven't thought about copyrights and genealogy, but you should. What's original, value added, public domain, registered, fair use, the amount you can quote, published, unpublished, work for hire, ownership, the effect of electronic media, and much more is covered in this short, but very informative work. We're all interested in sharing genealogy, but knowing what is proper, ethical and legal is something we also all need to know. This book is highly recommended. It can be obtained from Genealogical.com, a link to which can be found in this site's Family Resources section, or from the link to Amazon.com on the right..
Chronicler of the Cavaliers - A Life of the Virginia Novelist Dr. William A. Caruthers Davis, Curtis Carroll An interesting book. Dr. Caruthers published several books in the 1830's. There is also a good amount of early Caruthers genealogy in Virginia here.

Debrett's Peerage of England, Scotland, and Ireland Debrett, John Originally published in 1802, this edition was published in 1808. It is the definitive book on peerage of Great Britain. It is in 2 volumes. Volume I is England. Volume II is Scotland and Ireland. A terrific addition to anyone's library - if you can find it at a reasonable price. NOT AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE
Directory of British Peerages, A Leeson, Francis L. A nice little book, succinctly listing British, English, Scots and Irish peerages by both family name and name of the estate, including year made a peer.  A good reference.  Extinct peerages are not included.  You will not find Carruthers in here.  From a letter from the Court of the Lord Lyon, Ormond Pursuivant of Arms, "The Carruthers designation was not of a Peerage, but a Feudal Barony".
Directory of Scots Banished to the America Plantations 1650-1775 Dobson, David Lile all of Dobson's books, do not expect this to be a definitive list. He updates his listing every few years. This is his 2003 edition.

Early Families of Eastern and Southeastern Kentucky Kozee, William C. Over 150 families covered in almost 900 pages. Great source if your family was from this area.

English Civil Wars, The Carruthers, Bob Terrific book with much history, pictures and maps. These civil wars were in fact 3 distinct wars between 1642 and 1651. Much more than just Cavaliers versus puritan Roundheads, these wars ushered in the end of feudalism and the beginnings of a constitutional monarchy and the modern standing army.
Family Tree Resource Book for Genealogists Carmack, Sharon DeBartolo and Nevius, Erin - Editors A wonderful resource, by county in the United States, of how you can research and obtain original documents. A must for all serious genealogists. Links, as appropriate, to sites that are relevant to this web sites articles, are provided within this site's web pages. General links to global data bases are provided from the Genealogy section of our Family Resources page.
Genealogy Online Crowe, Elizabeth Powell An excellent book, highly recommended. Many online addresses are identified to help you with your online search. A number of links to the addresses are added to the Family Resources - Genealogy page of this web site.

Historical Families of Dumfriesshire and the Border Wars, The Johnstone, C. L. An excellent book. Johnstone originally published this in 1888. It was reprinted in the 1990's. This site has a copy of both versions.  In his book, Johnstone specifically gave more prominence to families whose history had not been published before - and that includes the Carruthers. You will find here more stories about Carruthers in early history than anywhere else, except maybe on this web site. Also, the sovereigns of Scotland going back before MacBeth are listed and a descendant chart is provided from Alfred the Great (d. 901). An excellect drawing of Lochmaben Castle in the book, gives one a better understanding of the strength of its defences than just viewing today's ruins. The 200 page paperback book is relatively inexpensive and can be obtained from Genealogical.com, a link to which can be found in this site's Family Resources section.

History of Burgh of Dumfries McDowell, William Written in 1906, this book has a wealth of information on the area of Scotland in which the Carruthers family lived. Although Carruthers is mentioned very few times in the book, much on the local history and major events affecting the area can be learned from reading this.

History of North Carolina Moore, John W. Written in 1884, this book references a number of times an earlier book, "Old North State", by Caruthers. This is an excellent resource. We plan to use it on future articles on early North Carolina and the role of the Caruthers family there.

Intelligent Travelers Guide to Historic Scotland, The Crowl, Philip A.  An excellent book, almost a must for one's first trip to Scotland or one just beginning to research Scottish history.  The book is divided into two sections.  Almost 400 pages of Scottish history are supplemented by a Gazetteer the identifies thousands of possible tourist spots and specifics related to road names for how to find them.  This is particularly helpful for getting to the old castles like Caerlaverock and Lochmaben. This book is available for purchase from here.
Jacobite Peerage, The Marquis of Ruvigny and Raineval This is a full account of the Grants of Honor, Peerages, Baronetcies and Knighthoods bestowed on the adherents of the Stuarts by James II after his abdication, and by his son and grandson.

Jacobite Rebellions, The Barthorp, Michael This very short book (44 pages) appears to be from the Historic Site Visitor Information. In addition to a succinct description of the Jacobite Rebellions, it contains many pictures of uniforms of the times, weapons used, and pictures of leading figures of the battles. It also contains a very detailed description of events in a timeline form, from 1644 to 1788, describing the religious conflict that sent tens of thousands of immigrants to America and ended up putting Germans, who didn't even speak English, on the British throne.

Kith-Kin of Samuel Burdine Dunahay and Angel Carothers Dunahay, Lowell This small book (30 pages plus an index) was published in 1981. It mainly documents the Dunahay family and the descendants of Samuel and Angel. Some Carothers material is contained, but not going further back than Angel's father, Robert Carothers, and his wife Martha McKim.
Lifescapes of Scotland Compass Productions Beautiful, haunting music that will almost take you to Scotland without leaving your chair. This is not bagpipe music. It is mostly piano and orchestra. Very, very easily listning music..

Lord Wardens of the Marches of England and Scotland, The Pease, Howard Another excellent book full of interesting information. Difficult to find, though, as only 500 copies of this 1913 published edition was printed. The book covers customs, laws, courts, offices, payments and families of the Borders, along with a chronilogical list of the Wardens of each of the 6 Marches.

Lowland Lairds Fergusson, James Nine essays were combined to make up this book. Some were originally published in various magazines while others were written specifically for this book. An excellent description of the economic times through the ages can be found here. Some specific families are reviewed here, not the Carruthers, but Fergusson, Nisbet, Maule, Crauford, Kennedy, Nairne, and others are covered to some extent.

National Archives, The - A Practical Guide for Family Historians Colwell, Stella This book addresses how to use the National Archives of the United Kingdom. For those of us tracing our family in Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales. A caveat though. As they say in the front of this book, "Only a tiny fraction of the records that were originally created centrally are selected for permanent preservation, on the grounds of their lasting historical interest and value". They do hold some private records, too, but the vast majority are records of the government's activities and decisions. At the very minimum, they provide historical context for researchers of family history. Again, appropriate links can be found on this web site's Family Resources - Genealogy page.

Original Scots Colonists of Early America - 1612-1783, The Dobson, David Dobson has compiled a series of books on immigrants to America. And we thank him for that. However, instead of buying this book, or any of his others, I suggest that you buy a CD from the Genealogical Publishing Company, which contains 16 of Dobson's publications, including this one, and all the supplements to his work. Valuable information here, it's just that the CD provides easier, more comprehensive, and ultimately more inexpensive media. The link highlighted above will take you to this site's Family Resources page on Genealogy, where there is a link to Genealogical.com.
Political and Civil History of the United States of America from 1763 to 1797 Pitkin, Timothy Another extremely rare find, published in 1828 and first owned by John Henderson Carothers, this 2 volume, 1100 page history by Pitkin, is the definitive history of the United States through the end of Washington's presidency. Excerpts will be added to this web site over time, to round out the political climate affecting the families living through the Revolution.

Records of the Carruthers Family Carruthers, A. Stanley and Reid, R. C. The definitive book on the Carruthers family history in Scotland.  Published in 1933 to a subscriber list of only 100 copies, of which only 2 were in the United States.  This is a very difficult book to find.  It contains genealogical charts of major Carruthers families tracing back to William de Carruthers in 1215 and also narrative chapters on the families.  Records of the Carruthers Family is now serialized on this web site.Records of the Carruthers Family
Revolution of the Upper Ohio 1775-1777 Thwaites, Reuben Gold and Kellogg, Louise Phelps This is a follow-up to the 1905 printing of a Documentary History of Dunsmore's War 1774. It covers principal incidents and prominent characters of the long frontier stretching from the Greenbrier region in southwestern Virginia to the post at Kittanning on the Upper Allegheny. A terrific history of the relations with the Indians and strategies in the West during the early years of the Revolution.

Revolutionary Incidents and Sketches of Character, Chiefly in the "Old North State" Caruthers, Rev. E. W., D.D. Published in 1854, this is an extremely rare book, covering North Carolina incidents leading up to, and during, the Revolutionary War. Often referenced in other books (see The History of North Carolina by John W. Moore, 1884, and reviewed above), E. W. Caruthers collected first hand knowledge from a variety of sources to produce, essentially, the first history book on North Carolina. Excerpts from the book will be added to this web site over time. We were very lucky to obtain this book.

Scotland's best Loved Driving Tours Frommers A nice, small book.  Lots of pictures and maps.  This book is best used if you have plenty of time and just want to drive through the Scottish countryside, with a reference book that tells you what you will see along the way.  If you know specifically what you want to see on your trip, there are better ways to learn how to get there.
Scottish & Border Battles & Ballads Brander, Michael A very nice book (available from the Battles of Scotland page on this site). Brander covers the Scottish battles to which memorable songs were written. He includes the words of the songs, also, and sometimes even the sheet music. Battles covered by the book include Largs, Bannockburn, Otterburn, Harlaw, Flodden, Corichie, Reidswire, Alford, Kilsyth, Dunbar, Loudon Hill, Killiecrankie, Sheriffmuir, Prestonpans and Falkirk, along with driving directions of how to get to the battlefields.
Seven Centuries in the Royal Four Towns of Lochmaben Fairn, Anne Available from the Dumfries and Galloway Family History Research Centre, this book describes the four settlements of Hightae, Smallholm, Heck and Greenhill.  This book provides an excellent glimpse of what life was like in this area of Scotland over the last 700 years.  Quite a bit concerning the Carruthers estate at Rammerscales can be found in this book, as it was very close geographically to these towns.  Dumfries and Galloway Family History Research Centre
Steel Bonnets, The - The Story of the Anglo-Scottish Border Reivers Fraser, George MacDonald Carruthers are only mentioned here, while 21 families, including Maxwells, Johnstones, Bells and Irvines are covered extensively.

Strongholds of the Border Reivers, The Durham, Keith
Studies in the History of the English Feudal Barony Painter, Sidney This is Book Number 3 of Series 61 of the Johns Hopkins University Studies in Historical and Political Science. Other than the book The First Century of English Feudalism, a study that stops in the year 1166, the field of Baronial History has been largely untouched. Although this book specifically covers English baronial history, much can be learned here concerning Scottish baronial history, for example, obligations, resources, incomes, etc. are all very similar. This history of the utilization of the the baronies by their feudal lords provides great insight into life in the Middle Ages. This book covers the period of the Norman Conquest to about 1350.
Surnames and Clansmen - Border Family History in Earlier Days Robson, Michael A very good book on surnames and Border Family history. 200 pages, in paperback, printed in 1998. It also provides one of the best accounts available, in an entire chapter, on the long legal trial over the Dormont estate, covered on this web site as the story Sir Walter's Scott's Influence. Since one of that story's main characters was Betty Robson, I wonder if the author is related.

Whiskey Rebellion, The Slaughter, Thomas P.
Who Owns Scotland Now  Cramb, Auslan An interesting book, but not necessarily 200 pages worth, when one or two lists would do.  The biggest landowner in Scotland is the Forestry Commission with 1,600,000 acres.  The Duke of Buccleuch is 2nd with 270,000 acres and various persons and families on down from there.  The book does have an interesting list of major foreign landowners.  The largest, at 70,000 acres is an unknown Malaysian businessman, followed by an Arab billionaire, the head of Lego, a Swedish heiress, Stanton Avery (a US billionaire), and Mohammed Al Fayed (the owner of Harrods).
